Research

The Centre’s research aims to support the development of knowledge, policies and practices that will ensure an equitable energy transition and the responsible development of energy and resource projects.

Researchers within the Centre deliver their expertise through four research themes, each covering a key aspect of the energy transition: Communities & Coexistence, Environment, Decarbonisation, Energy Security.

In addition to its own multidisciplinary research team, the Centre utilises the resources and expertise of The University of Queensland, a Group of Eight University.

The Centre is independent and technology neutral but specialises on the role of gas in the energy transition due to its researchers’ extensive expertise and the high demand for research in the space.

Research themes

Applies established and innovative social science methods to understand the complex social, cultural, policy and economic dimensions of energy resource developments.
Seeks to understand and reduce the environmental impacts of energy resource projects and technologies that will be critical to the energy transition.
Undertakes modelling and analysis to ensure energy planning meets societal objectives for the sustainability, reliability and affordability of domestic and export energy markets.
Investigates key knowledge gaps and solutions to assess opportunities and scenarios for accelerating the transition to a net-zero economy.

Between 2013 and 2024 the Centre completed numerous projects as first the Centre for Coal Seam Gas and subsequently the Centre for Natural Gas. These iterations of the Centre used different research to organise projects. These themes and their projects can be found here
