About us

The University of Queensland's Gas & Energy Transition Research Centre undertakes independent research to address the complexities and challenges of the energy transition in Australia and the Asia-Pacific.

The Centre’s research and engagement aims to support the development of knowledge, policies and practices that will ensure an equitable energy transition and the responsible development of energy resource projects.

The Centre delivers and facilitates interdisciplinary research through four broad themes that reflect the diversity of issues associated with the energy transition:

Communities & Coexistence
Applies established and innovative social science methods to understand the complex social, cultural, policy and economic dimensions of energy resource developments.

Environment
Seeks to understand and reduce the environmental impacts of energy resource projects and technologies that will be critical to the energy transition.

Decarbonisation
Investigates key knowledge gaps and solutions to assess opportunities and scenarios for accelerating the transition to a net-zero economy.

Energy Security
Undertakes modelling and analysis to ensure energy planning meets societal objectives for the sustainability, reliability and affordability of domestic and export energy markets.

The expertise in these themes is complemented by a network of experts from across UQ and leading international universities, as well as insights gathered through more than a decade of work in Queensland's energy resources sector.

The critical need for research into the role gas may play in the energy transition means that, while the Centre is independent and technology neutral, it leverages world-leading, gas-specific expertise to provide specialised insights in that area.

We firmly support UQ's efforts to recognise and strengthen Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' presence in academia and broader society.

Combined, the energy and resources sectors are the largest employers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia. As a Centre that operates in and adjacent to those sectors, we understand the importance of ensuring UQ's reconciliation principles are proactively applied to our work. We also recognise that research in those sectors presents us with unique opportunities to seek to involve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in projects that will not only affect them, but which can draw on their expertise and lived experiences.
