Centre Director Professor David Close outlines the critical role gas-powered generation (GPG) will play in Australia's energy future in a new article published by The Australian.
In the article, Professor Close emphasises GPG's ability to firm or back-up alternative energy sources, which has resulted in it becoming an important element in the competing strategies for decarbonising the country's grid put forward by the Australian Labor Party and the Liberal National Party.
Additionally, the article explores the unique importance GPG has in different states and territories, and the counter-intuitive reality that a substantial gas export industry will be critical to maintaining a domestic gas supply that can meet future peak volumes.
The Gas & Energy Transition Resarch Centre's Energy Security theme undertakes modelling and analysis to ensure energy planning meets societal objectives for the sustainability, reliability and affordability of domestic and export energy markets. You can read more about the theme here.
