UQ and CCSG awarded Australia's first research chair in onshore gas modelling

16 May 2017

As Australia’s first university with a Foundation CMG (FCMG) industrial chair in onshore gas reservoir modelling, UQ joins the Foundation’s 18 chairs represented by 13 universities in four continents, including University of Texas at Austin (USA) and Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh (UK).

FCMG is an international, non-profit organisation that funds world-leading university research in oil and gas reservoir simulation, partnering with government and industry to support student education and research.

The chair is supported by $1.27 million over five years and will be increased by UQ funds and the Queensland gas industry in collaboration with the Centre for Coal Seam Gas (CCSG). This will enable research worth an estimated $4.8 million.

Professor Suzanne Hurter from UQ's School of Earth and Environmental Sciences has been appointed as holder of the new chair, and it is the chair's aim to grow and broaden UQ’s research program within petroleum geoscience and engineering, improving models for sustainable, onshore gas production at reduced cost.

“Foundation CMG decided to initiate a Research Chair at The University of Queensland because of their highly functional organisation and the gas/LNG (liquefied natural gas) development infrastructure in the region. Their collaboration with the industry, government and other stakeholders to work towards unlocking the vast coal seam gas resources in Australia should bring tremendous social and economic benefits to the country,” said Mr Duke Anderson, President of Foundation CMG.
