Advisory and outreach services

Providing independent and evidence-based information to governments, industries and communities is critical to the Gas & Energy Transition Research Centre's mission.

The Centre provides this service through a variety of methods, from bespoke information sessions and briefings and large annual events to government submissions and direct e-mail updates.

The insights our team shares reflects the expertise within our four research themes: Communities & Coexistence, Environment, Energy Security and Decarbonisation.

Government

As a independent, outcome-focused, and evidence-based research Centre, we are a logical knowledge-sharing partner for local, state and federal governments in Australia and abroad. This has led frequent and consistent engagement between our researchers and governments since our launch in 2013.

This research spans a range of areas, from direct policy and research briefings with Government Ministers in relevant portfolios and multi-day workshops for public service decision-makers, to technical presentations for regulators and the participation in government studies, advisory groups and projects. Specific engagements include:

  • Multi-day workshops with Queensland Treasury to ensure decisionmakers comphrehensive understanding of Australia's upstream, midstream and downstream gas industry
  • Briefings to Queensland Minister for Resources (and equivalent portfolios) and Ministerial staff
  • Queensland Parliamentary briefings, collaborating with CSIRO/GISERA, to brief parliamentarians on new science and new insights.
  • Meetings and presentations as research briefings to DEHP, DNRM, DSITIA, Coordinator General and OGIA staff.
  • Contributions to government reports such as the Commonwealth Government’s Office of Chief Economist, Review of the Socioeconomic Impacts of Coal Seam Gas in Queensland and the Queensland Gas Supply Demand Action Plan.
  • Membership in government advisory groups, including the Queensland Code of Practice for the Construction and Decommissioning of CSG Wells, the Queensland Petroleum and Gas Inspectorate’s Safety & Health (upstream) Stakeholder Engagement Committee, the Queensland Geological Survey’s Exploration Advisory Group, and the Surat Cumulative Management Area Technical Advisory Panel.
  • Numerous submissions to state and federal government inquiries.

The Centre regularly makes submissions to State and Federal government inquiries.

Industry

Our Centre is impact focused - we work closely with industry partners to ensure our research is relevant and applicable to the energy sector. That means we frequently host events, workshops and training programs with companies to upskill staff and share technical and policy insights.

Our outreach and advisory services have been delivered to organisations working in coal seam gas, liquified natural gas, renewable project development and operation, energy infrastructure and generation (government and non-government owned), and many other areas. Each of these engagements draw on the unique expertise of our different research themes

Communities

The Centre has undertaken briefings, mainly around social performance and groundwater science in numerous events over the last five years, often collaborating with organisations such as AgForce, the Queensland GasFields Commission or the LNG Compliance Unit. These are generally used to update the public in the regions on emerging research insights or on broader matters related to the gas and energy sectors.
